Age of learning embraced by community

THE fledgling Sherbrooke U3A is looking for new members for the coming term.
The University of the Third Age is a non-profit organisation that provides a social and educational outlet for retired and semi-retired people.
The Sherbrooke branch has been established with help from an Upwey and District Community Bank grant and other donations.
Founding member Hilary Shannon said the Shire of Yarra Ranges had also helped the group by allowing it to rent Upwey Senior Citizens Hall as a course base and office.
The shire has also recently upgraded the entrance to the hall, including a new ramp, steps and garden.
“We have had some help getting established and are extremely grateful for these avenues which have got us off the ground. It is now up to us to be successful,” Ms Shannon said.
“We need to open up and extend our membership to survive but also to offer a wider range of topics.”
Poetry and ethics are among the classes on offer.
Registration day for term four is Wednesday 3 September from 10am to 2pm at Upwey Senior Citizens Hall.
A $10 course fee covers everything for the term.
The current newsletter can be picked up at the members’ lunch day on Wednesday 3 September from 10am to 2pm.
The Sherbrooke U3A office is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1pm to 3pm and can be contacted on 9754 3339.
