Crisis brings out the best

HILLS people are being urged to dig deep to help two local boys who lost their mother, Carol Bayard, suddenly.
An appeal to help her sons, James and Joel, was set up last month and has already raised more than $10,000.
Last month the Mail reported Carol, 49, died from complications after falling off the roof of her house.
The single-mother was cleaning out the guttering when she slipped and fell five metres, breaking her pelvis in two places and tearing her bladder.
Carol’s family and friends were shocked when she succumbed to complications and died from a blood clot.
Her death left the Monbulk community reeling and her sons in shock with no way to support themselves.
The community has banded together to help out the boys and are now calling on others to dig deep.
Hills people are being urged to give generously at a charity auction on 19 September at Monbulk Bowling Club.
Funds raised from the night will go towards making sure the boys continue their education.
Appeal spokeswoman Helen Hostettler is asking for donations such as vouchers and plants.
Ms Hostettler said it was fantastic to see the community getting behind the boys.
A movie night held at Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave on 17 August raised more than $4000.
Ms Hostettler said a freezer was donated to the boys.
Family friend Robert Wilson said a roster of more than 21 locals had been drawn up to provide the boys with good home cooked meals.
“It has been heart warming to see the boys given so much help,” he said.
Mr Wilson is hoping to see more than 200 people at the auction night.
The night costs $27.50 for a two-course meal with $10 of that going towards the appeal fund.
Mr Wilson said if 200 people attended the night more than $2000 would be raised from the meals alone.
A number of items have already been donated for the auction including tools, a signed AFL jumper, jewellery, vouchers and much more.
The Mail has also donated a voucher for free advertising in the newspaper.
Ms Hostettler said the auction promised some great bargains while raising cash for a good cause.
Those wanting to get behind James and Joel should book a table for the auction.
Doors will open at 6pm for those wanting a bite to eat and the auction will kick off at 8pm.
To book a table call Vanessa at Monbulk Bistro on 9756 6566 or call Helen at the Monbulk swimming pool on 9756 6227 to make a donation.
