THE Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) is again holding its annual Christmas Appeal.
At the large Christmas tree at Belgrave Library, people can take a tag from the tree and leave an ‘unwrapped’ gift for anyone aged between newborn and 18 years.
The concept is well-established in the region and has helped spread Christmas cheer to many children over the past 15 years.
DRERS Manager Tania Bevan said it was a simple yet highly effective way to help the community in what could be a stressful time.
“It helps put a big smile on the faces of many children in our community,” she said.
“Each year, we seek support from the community to help us to make the event a success, and to help those in need at Christmas.
“We’d like to thank those who have donated previously and this year.”
Ms Bevan said DRERS liked to aim for an equal spread of gifts among the age groups.
“Sometimes it’s a little easier to buy for a young child, but harder for a teenager,” she said.
“There is an option to leave a gift card, so the teens, in particular, can purchase something they would enjoy.”
Members of the community are welcome to leave gifts up until Friday, 16 December.
The gifts will be given the next day.
Ms Bevan said DRERS also prepared hampers to give away, so donations such as plum puddings were welcome.
“Through giving away hampers, it may allow people to perhaps visit, or invite, friends and relatives to share Christmas lunch,” she said.
“It’s a great way to help people feel connected.”
The Belgrave Library is located at Reynolds Lane, Belgrave.
DRERS is located at 1632 Burwood Highway, Belgrave.
