Relief all round … and fun

By Casey Neill
ARTIST Tiriki Onus describes his latest exhibition as “fun” and “egocentric”.
Internationally renowned indigenous Australian activist, academic, writer and actor Gary Foley officially opened Relief at Burrinja last Sunday (19 October).
The exhibition includes traditional paintings as well as large artworks containing dozens of individual pieces.
Mr Onus combined a life-long love of sculpture with new mediums and techniques to create the collection, which he says is “egocentric, self-centred and completely lacking in altruism”.
“But hopefully it will make it fun,” he said.
Burrinja visual arts coordinator Tilla Buden said there was a real freedom and playfulness to the works in Relief, which was created specifically for Burrinja.
“This is a rare opportunity to see what an artist can create when they are allowed to follow their fancy and realise their imaginings on a large scale,” she said.
Relief is on in the Jarmbi Gallery at Burrinja Cultural Centre, 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey, until 2 November.
For details and bookings call Burrinja on 9754 8723 or send an email to events@burrinja.org.au
