HILLS homeless can now grab a bite and find a friendly ear in Monbulk every Friday.
The Ranges Community Church last month launched its soup kitchen beside St George’s Church in Main Street.
Volunteers will serve soup and bread beneath a marquee between 6.30pm and 9pm each Friday while barbecue facilities would be available for warmer months.
“We want to help people out who need it,” organiser Gavin Smith said.
“And it encourages people to come out and talk. You hear some horrific stories.”
Mr Smith said one man slept with a knife, and others have only newspapers to keep them warm at night.
Non-Christians could also avail themselves of this facility.
“We want to show ourselves in the community like Jesus did, and talk to people,” Mr Smith said.
“It’s no good sitting in a church waiting for them to come.”
There are currently 10 volunteers.
“Anybody is welcome to come along and help out,” Mr Smith said.
