Desirable brew

By Casey Neill
SELBY Folk Club will this year celebrate three decades of bringing music to the hills.
The volunteer-run group will mark the occasion with a special folk event at Burrinja on Friday 3 April.
The Undesirables will hit the stage with Waifs drummer and soloist David Ross Macdonald as part of their second Australian tour.
The Canadian duo is known for its laconic humour and musicianship.
Queenslander Ange Takats will share her latest album, Aniseed Tea.
Takats took home the 2008 Lis Johnston Award for Vocal Excellence at the National Folk Festival in Canberra
Her voice has been described as Gillian Welch meets Joan Baez.
Takats joined a Bangkok folk rock band during a stint in Thailand.
Her Americana music influences stem from the Thai musicians who owned old hippie records left by US soldiers during the Vietnam War.
“They introduced me to singers like Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt and groups like The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers and The Band,” Takats said.
Melbourne lap-slide guitarist Leigh Sloggett and soloist Peter Yorke will round out the line up.
Folk Club president and sound engineer David Miller is said to have a nose for emerging talent.
He has booked acts including The Audreys, Dev’lish Mary, Matt Walker, Bruce Watson and Enda Kenny during his time with the group.
The folk club meets on the first Friday of each month. Each event caters for emerging and visiting performers.
“It’s a buzz to see great performers in our intimate acoustic venue,” he said. “It’s great to be thrilled by early talent and feel we’re witnessing history.”
The club plans to release a double CD featuring performers who have hit the Folk Club stage.
Live celebrations will continue in May with legendary US storyteller, songwriter and instrumentalist Kristina Olsen.
The 3 April event will kick off at 8pm at Burrinja Upstairs, 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey.
Tickets are $15 at the door.
