THE Yarra Valley will host a pub crawl with a difference this Father’s Day weekend.
The inaugural Yarra Valley Grape Run will be held on Saturday 5 September.
Participants will set off from Yarra Glen Hotel and run or walk 13.7 kilometres to the Healesville Hotel.
They also have the option on a 5.2 kilometre course by starting at Yarra Glen’s TarraWarra winery.
Event spokesman Byron Dodd said organisers hoped to attract people back to the region following February’s devastating bushfires.
Mr Dodd said he hoped the race would entice people to make a day or weekend of it in the Yarra Valley.
“It’s really just trying to get people out of the city for the weekend,” he said.
Participants will have access to showers at the finish line and can freshen up and head off to nearby wineries, attractions and accommodation.
Buses will also be available to ferry people back to Yarra Glen.
Mr Dodd hopes to attract 1000 participants.
The event is modelled on South Africa’s famous Comrades Marathon.
The 89 kilometre race dates back to 1921 and its route direction alternates each year.
The Yarra Valley version will follow suit and next year kick off in Healesville.
Participants can enter on the day from 8.30am. Both courses start at 10am.
Entry is $85 for a family and from $33 to $38 for individuals.
No dogs, bikes or rollerblades are permitted.
