SELBY Primary School has been awarded the Shire of Yarra Ranges inaugural HabitAT School Awards.
Grade three and four students from Selby, who called themselves the SWAT Squad (Saving Water and Trees) entered a number of activities including propagating local indigenous grasses from seed, mulching and composting.
The SWAT Squad began to plan improvements to the quality of their local habitat using the school’s own fauna database and the flora list for mountain grey gum damp forest from the council website.
Principal Lindy Cooney said news of the award was exciting for the school.
Grade three and four teacher Kate Mercer echoed the principal’s praise.
“The school has a tradition of doing well with environmental projects,” Ms Mercer said.
“But this was about letting students see the change in environment and keeping the area beautiful.”
She said the SWAT Squad was supported by parents, teachers, local environmental groups and ex-students who were all keen to lend a helping hand.
Selby Primary School was awarded with a trophy and prizes at a special presentation on Tuesday.
Other winning schools – Sherbrooke Community School and Mountain District Christian School – will also receive the same awards.
