Drive for safety

YOUNG hills drivers will improve their road skills in memory of a tragic loss.
Five Dandenongs fire brigade volunteers and two residents received driver training awards at the 10th annual Anthony and Travis Hall Driver Education Memorial Fund presentation.
Olinda CFA volunteer Geoff Champion established the fund in memory of Upwey Junior Fire Brigade members Anthony and Travis Hall. The brothers, aged 15 and 13, were killed in a road accident in Cockatoo in January 1995.
Their father Peter was the senior crew’s first lieutenant.
Mr Hall hoped the course would equip young drivers with car control skills.
“We hope they’re going to learn something that’s going to encourage them to handle themselves on the road properly so that something doesn’t happen like what happened to us,” he said.
Mr Hall thanked former Upwey CFA captain Peter Marke for his work on the fund.
Murcott’s Driving Excellence donated two car control courses to the fund and provided the others at a discount rate.
Paris Phillipou, 18, said he was proud to take part.
“It’s bound to. It’s a great idea,” he said.
The fund welcomes new sponsors and donations. Call Peter Marke on 9754 5555 for more information.
