ST JOSEPH’S College is a Catholic secondary school for boys in the care of the Salesians of Don Bosco.
The Ferntree Gully college strives to provide boys with the specific educational, social/ emotional and spiritual tools required as they journey towards manhood in an environment which is positive and academically rigorous.
“Boys learn in different ways to girls,” principal Vin Feeney said. “Boys often require sign posts which will guide them towards their learning destination.
“They need to be engaged in real purposeful learning which uses teaching and assessment styles that draw on boys’ strengths.”
St Joseph’s has pioneered a number of innovative programs to give each boy the attention and opportunities he needs to develop into a fine young man.
Mr Feeney said the school each year selected a group of Year 10 students to participate in the Lighthouse Project.
“This program, run in conjunction with a number of local Catholic Primary schools, offers our students the chance to work with Grade 5/6 boys on a number of literacy based projects,” he said. “As mentors to these younger students, our Year 10 boys leave with the knowledge that they can be positive role models in our community.
“Our Gifted and Talented Education program is another initiative designed to empower our boys in which students with outstanding ability are supported to enhance their talent across a range of fields.”
