FERNTREE Gully’s Philip Gore is putting horology on the map.
The antique timepiece repairer and maintainer – or horologist – established Ferntree Gully Watch and Clock 27 years ago.
Knox Council in 2008 named the road beside the store Horologist Lane in his honour.
Mr Gore stocks, repairs and restores a large selection of vintage wristwatches, antique pocket watches and clocks.
“Come into the shop and you’ll step back in time, marvelling at the array of clocks and watches, each with its individual chime and tick,” he said.
He specialises in vintage Rolex and Omega repairs, with many hard to find parts.
He has a large stock of pocket and wrist watch movements from the 1700s to the 1960s.
“With a large stock of original spare parts we can assure you that we can repair your watch or clock,” he said.
Mr Gore also stocks batteries, bands and modern watches and estate jewellery. Shoppers are bound to find the perfect 21st, groom or birthday gift.
They can also check out antique and vintage watchmaker’s tools and listen to the watchmaker in his workshop.
Mr Gore’s career – a dying art – started as a hobby.
A tool maker by trade, he began tinkering with watches and clocks at home.
“Then I basically grew to love what I do,” he said.
“You’ve got to have a passion for this business.”
He has worked as an official consultant for Sotheby’s Art Auction House for the past 12 years.
“I get repairs from the UK, Europe, America, Hong Kong, Singapore all the time,” he said.
Ferntree Gully Watch and Clock is located at 117-119 Station Street, Ferntree Gully, and is open 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9.30am to noon Saturdays.
