Soup for changing souls

HILLS residents can kick up their heels and get to know their neighbours at a community event this Saturday.
Transition Sherbrooke is inviting the community to get together for a Soup Social on Saturday 14 August from 5.30pm at the Selby Community House.
Transition Sherbrooke is a community group that is part of the worldwide Transition Town movement.
“Transition Towns is a community development model supporting people and communities to foster skills and resilience in preparation for a low carbon future,” organiser Christina Reeves said.
“The group’s goal is to create an ecologically sustainable and resilient local community which takes on a proactive role in addressing the issues of climate change and peak oil.”
“Transition initiatives exemplify the principles of thinking globally and acting locally.”
The newly-formed group believes an important aspect of building a resilient community is getting to know everyone in the local area and enjoying social time together.
“Through working together on the different aspects of transition we can begin to reduce our reliance on oil and discover more sustainable ways to live,” Ms Reeves said.
“If we collectively plan and act early enough, there’s every likelihood that we can create a way of living that keeps us more in touch with our environment and connected to each other.
“Lifestyle changes are easier to make when you are working together with other people.”
Ms Reeves said the Soup Social was about coming together as a community for some fun and frivolity.
“Sometimes it is easy to get bogged down with all of the doom and gloom and feel powerless,” she said.
“So it is important to remember to make time to come together with others and celebrate the small steps that have been taken.”
Everyone is welcome to join in the family friendly social evening to share a bowl of warm hearty soup, some music and lively spirit.
“Please bring a plate to share, a log for the fire, a gold coin donation to help with hall hire and your musical instruments,” she said.
Readers can call Christina Reeves on 8741 1477 or send an email to christinareeves@optusnet.com.au for more information about the soup social or Transition Sherbrooke.
