MOUNT Evelyn Special Developmental School has celebrated 25 years of caring for kids with high medical needs.
Past and present parents and students marked the milestone at the school last Saturday.
Visitors enjoyed an animal nursery, helium balloons and chocolate birthday cake.
Former students checked out technology changes since their time at the school, including the interactive whiteboards now in every classroom.
Past principal Christine Sproson and present school head Helen Johnston cut the cake and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe spoke of the school’s contribution to the community.
Mount Evelyn Special Developmental School has an early education program for preschoolers and helps parents find places for their children in mainstream schools.
It offers primary programs for students aged between five and 11, secondary programs for children aged 11 to 16 and vocational pathway programs for 16 to 18-year-olds.
The school cares for 130 students with intellectual, multiple and sensory disabilities, including autism.
The Hereford Road site has purpose-designed buildings, a hydrotherapy pool, fitness areas and outdoor spaces. The school was previously located at the Melba Centre on Ormeau Road. – Casey Neill
