Manufacturing under review

THE State Government has announced the establishment of a Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission inquiry to inform the strategic direction and growth of Victoria’s manufacturing industry.
Melbourne’s south-east currently produces 44 pe rcent of the total Victorian output of manufactured goods and is renowned as a centre for innovative manufacturing, with many companies possessing world-leading technology within their specialist fields.
South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich has welcomed the announcement, made last Wednesday, saying the inquiry is a key part of revitalising the manufacturing sector in Melbourne’s south-east.
“The coalition has recognised the importance of our local manufacturing industry, and putting in place the right policy settings will create new jobs and grow the manufacturing sector’s contribution to our broader economy,” she said.
Manufacturing, Exports and Trade Minister Richard Dalla-Riva encouraged all interested parties, including small-to-medium enterprises, to contribute to the inquiry.
The inquiry will take into account the 2010 report Manufacturing in Victoria by the Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee and will also identify key drivers of future growth across the sector.
The commission’s inquiry will consider submissions and will release a draft report for consultation before a final report is provided to the government.
