Scheduled for Friday 19 January, the Knox libraries are hosting Summer Songs, a morning outdoor concert.
Free and open to all, attendees are invited to bring a picnic and head down to Miller’s Homestead in Boronia for some fun on the lawn.
Manager of customer experience at Your Library – which services the Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges areas – Sarah Hopkins, said the organisation aims to hold community events that are interesting, stimulate people’s imagination and are enjoyable.
“[It] might lead them to think about doing something for themselves,” Sarah said.
Along with a coffee van for the grown ups, Sarah said “there will also be craft tables for the kids”.
From world music, to contemporary compositions, to art song, a range of genres will be performed by duos of vocalists and guitarists.
“We’ve got two performers. A group called duo De Graaf Connie, which is soprano and a guitar and then we’ve got another vocals and guitar which is Barb Shearer Jones and Franny,” Sarah said.
First up at 10.15am, Duo De Graaf Connie will deliver a bout of classical art songs, arranged for soprano and guitar. New compositions will also be featured in this performance.
Barb and Franny will be next to hit the verandah at 11.15am with some vocals and guitar. These community choristers will perform a wide variety of world music and contemporary compositions.
Seeing as the five Knox Libraries are a place for quiet and don’t have the facilities to host large scale events, Your Library runs Miller’s Homestead for the Knox City Council.
“At Miller’s Homestead we hold a number of community events, Sarah said.
“Things that we would love to hold in our libraries but we can’t because we don’t have enough room.”
Performers will sing out from the balcony of the homestead to the lawn where guests will be situated.
“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to bring free music to the community at the delightful setting of Miller’s Homestead,” Sarah said.
“The five Knox libraries and Miller’s Homestead work cooperatively together to bring a diverse range of experiences and opportunities to the community.”
