POLICE are investigating a crash which occurred near one of the worst intersections in the City of Casey.
Police said about 5.40pm on 26 November, the white Holden Commodore changed lanes sharply about 200 metres southeast of the Clyde Road off ramp on the Monash Freeway and clipped the front of a Nissan Skyline, causing it to flip.
The 29-year-old Bunyip man, who was driving the Skyline, and his 20-year-old female passenger from Berwick were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Commodore was a 22-year-old Endeavour Hills woman.
VicRoads recently announced the start of works for a $1.68 million project to improve safety at the intersection of Clyde Road and the Princes Freeway in Berwick.
The road was named on the Casey Council’s 2011-12 priority listing for arterial road intersection upgrade, which was released in September.
VicRoads regional director Duncan Elliott said in the five-year period, ending December 2010, there were 35 casualty crashes at the interchange.
In the past 12 months, there have been about 30 crashes at the intersection.
The improvements to the Clyde Road and Princes Freeway intersection will include providing additional right-turn lanes for traffic turning into both inbound and outbound ramps to the Princes Freeway, modifications to the left slip lanes to help reduce queues and delays and an upgrade to pedestrian facilities.
Work is expected to be completed by May 2012.
The project is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and delivered by VicRoads, and is an addition to the $55.6m upgrade of Clyde Road between High Street and Kangan Drive that has been jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments.
