IT LOOKS like a specialised go-kart but the human powered vehicle at Kilberry Valley Primary School is an award-winning invention.
Grade five and six students at the Hampton Park school took home the Best Design and Construction at the RACV Energy Breakthrough.
Mark Bailey, who runs the studio at the school, said it was an impressive achievement.
“They did the most number of laps they have ever done, qualified the highest in the ten year school’s participation, recorded the fastest lap for the school and finally they also won an award for Design and Construction,” he said.
“This was all achieved by two grade 6 students and seven grade 5 students which means that there is a lot to look forward to for next year. Most teams are made up of only Grade 6 students.”
One of the students who got a front row seat in the race at Maryborough was Grade 6 student Brendon Murphy.
“Yeah it was fun, it was enjoyable,” he said.
It was the best ever performance by the school.
“They performed really well,” Mr Bailey said.
The annual race gets students to design and build their own vehicle or machine that could one day represent an ‘energy breakthough’.
“It’s an equal effort from all of the students,” Brendon said.
