Tricky greens

THE Cranbourne Bowling Club’s recent up and down form flat-lined in hot and muggy conditions on Saturday with a three-three split through the six sides.
Being the last round of Pennant before the Christmas break the top two sides were particularly keen to steel a march on their rivals and that they did with hard fought victories.
The top side played at home against Blackburn on their fast running 15 second bent grass green. The slippery green and gusty conditions made line and length tricky for bowlers, but the home side found touch before their opponents winning on three rinks and having a draw on the fourth. Lyn Quigg’s rink of Spike, Google and Spitter were the best winning rink of the side, finishing eight shots clear of their opposition. The win elevates Cranbourne into fourth spot on the Division 1 ladder.
The second side played at Armadale on a very slick needle-punch synthetic green. The home side got the jump on the Cranbourne side early and led by eight shots at the break. However Cranbourne fired up on the first end after tea and picked up numbers on all rinks to give them the lead. Big Mike Noa kept the Cranny side motivated with his raging war cry and they finished up winning by nine shots overall. Peter Elgar’s rink had another good win, thanks to some precision bowling by his third, Roger Roscoe. The win sees Cranbourne jump to third spot on the Division 2 ladder.
The third side played at home against Narre Warren and despite good wins on two of the four rinks were unable to grab the overall win, losing narrowly by two shots. Newly promoted skip Neil Fell had a good day and impressed his team with some big conversions.
Good wins away on the rinks of Rod Mills, Don O’Neill and Peter DeLisle gave the fourth side a 26 shot win over Berwick (five).
The fifth and sixth sides both lost to Mt Waverley and Parkdale.
