FORMER Ferntree Gully man and fallen digger Sergeant Brett Wood was recognised for his service in this year’s Australia Day Honours List.
Sgt Wood was killed in Afghanistan on 23 May last year, when a bomb exploded beside him as he led his Special Operations Task Group team in Kandahar Province.
The 32-year-old posthumously received one of seven Distinguished Service Medals handed out on 26 January for his leadership in action.
“His quiet professionalism earned him the respect of subordinates, peers and superiors,” his award citation read.
“He was uncompromising in enforcing standards and provided expert tactical advice to his commanders.
“His actions on operations directly saved lives, and he repeatedly led his troops gallantly against enemy positions while under fire. His selfless courage and distinguished leadership in action are an inspiration for all.” His widow Elvi Wood, said he was proud to be part of the 2nd Commando Regiment.
