THE Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) in Belgrave welcomed its new storage facilities last Thursday.
Yarra Ranges Council Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn cut the ribbon for the cupboards and shelves, declaring them officially open for use.
The relief service, along with Cr Dunn, contributed $3800 towards the facilities, which will store food items for families in need.
The organisation currently assists 35 clients, which includes both singles and families.
Service manager Tania Bevan said the installation of the shelves had allowed them to increase their capacity and also made it safer for the volunteers and staff members.
“It’s safer now because there aren’t any boxes lying around, which makes it better for our staff,” she said.
“It also creates a nicer environment and makes it easier to see at a glance what we need.
“The extra storage can help us do everything better – the new shelves make it easier to rotate food, there are just so many advantages.”
Cr Dunn said the service provided an important service to the community, particularly to those that are disadvantaged, so it was a great cause for her to help out with.
“They provide an important safety net to help vulnerable people and the extra storage will make it just that bit easier for the food bank service,” she said.
“Relief services provide really important service in the community so I really encourage people to support and donate to this cause.”
Ms Bevan thanked everyone for their continual support over the years.
“Thank all the people in the community who have been so helpful.”
