Silvan delivers spectacular finish to the 2025 Trail Running Series

The Trail Running Series marked a major milestone with the series finale held at Silvan in the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday, 3 August 2025, marking its’ 15th edition.

Close to 1000 enthusiastic runners and supporters gathered to celebrate a season of trail running, soaking up the crisp winter sunshine and the breathtaking landscapes of Silvan.

Runners had the choice of three course distances – seven km, 15km, and 22km – each weaving through towering Mountain Ash forests, dense fern gullies, and sweeping views of the valley.

The combination of flowing singletrack and off-road pathways provided the perfect setting for an unforgettable day on the trails.

Since its inception in 2012, the Trail Running Series has reshaped the sport in Australia – especially in Victoria – and the Silvan event continues to stand out as a fan favourite.

In addition to the beautiful course, the race featured the unique handicap format introduced in 2023, where runners start at staggered times based on their individual pace, creating a thrilling and inclusive atmosphere as participants flowed toward a unified finish – together.

“With our handicap system, it becomes more than just about the trail run – it’s the full experience – especially seeing competitors sharing stories and smiles at the finish line with friends and family, it’s a truly unique and memorable event,” Rapid Ascent’s event director, Sam Maffett said.

Essentially, slower runners started earlier in the morning, whilst faster runners headed off later across the five wave starts per course distance.

Participants exclaimed their enthusiasm for the race via the popular Trail Running Series Facebook page.

“Silvan was an absolute ripper; chilly start but oh once that sun came out, just perfect. Congratulations to all for another fantastic run,” Lucinda Scott said.

“Absolutely amazing event. Such fun and everyone is so friendly! Back again next year,” Maria Papasergi said.

“Most memorable moment of my run was a wallaby crossing the track at full speed barely 1m in front of me; can’t say that happens every day,” Sarah Mipsley said.

The three-race format for the 2025 Series kicked off at new location Blackwood on 1 June, followed by glorious winter sunshine at race two in Anglesea on July 6. The grand finale at Silvan on Sunday was a great way for enthusiasts to escape to the trails for one last hoorah this winter.

“We are immensely proud of the Trail Running Series and the impact it’s had on the trail running community over the past 15 years,” Mr Maffett said.

“Silvan is a standout – seeing runners hit the trails beneath the forest canopy with such energy, and reconnect with nature at our race is incredibly rewarding.”

“We’re grateful to all the participants, sponsors, and supporters who help make this event such a special celebration of trail running.”

The Series as a whole not only showcased the natural beauty of each location but also fostered a welcoming and social environment for all, with food, coffee, presentations, music and family activities at each race.

Organisers Rapid Ascent are already looking ahead to the future, with plans to explore more exciting off-road trails and locations in 2026.
