The St Michael’s Cup Day Fair is the next community event to be revived following the Covid-19 pandemic, returning to the church grounds on Tuesday 1 November.
The long-running fair returns after being cancelled in 2020 and 2021, starting at 9am. It will see regular favourites like trash and treasure, a silent auction and a barbeque put on by the parish’s committee.
Committee member Peter said the day is a fun experience for families and locals to enjoy.
“What we found, and this is a significant thing, is that with Covid all these sorts of events have been cancelled for the last two years,” he said.
“The events which bring the community together haven’t been there. Now, fortunately, we seem to have turned the corner.”
The Cup Day Fair has been running for decades and helps raise funds for Saint Michael and All Angels’ Anglican Church.
Mr Adams said the response to a book fair held by the parish shows there is a want by the community for local events.
“We feel this is also part of the healing process of getting back to some sort of normality,” he said.
“A lot of the volunteer organizations are still struggling to attract new members and we want to make sure that we keep the church going. We know from carrying out a survey a few years ago that people appreciate the presence of the church in Kalorama.”
During the June 2021 storm weather event, the church served as a community hub for people, some of whom had no access to heating, hot food or somewhere to charge their mobile phones. It was first built in 1940, usually locally sourced stone and contains eleven stain-glassed windows, including the Flanders window dedicated to those who lost their lives in the First World War.
