Growing from ash tragedies

BELGRAVE South Community House started in response to a community need following the Ash Wednesday bushfires and in the past 22 years has continued to evolve and to grow.
“Being community based, the centre is a caring, friendly and accommodating organisation, responding to the needs of the community,” said centre manager Lyn Young.
“The community house provides occasional childcare for children aged 0-6 years as well as a range of classes.”
Adult education classes offer computer courses, safe food training and Makaton, a specialised language development tool using signs and gestures.
Hobby classes include folk art, Tromp L’oeil, leadlighting and workshops while health and fitness classes are offered in tai chi, aerobics, pilates and fit kids.
Tax help, career guidance and a Cafe Club combine to present a comprehensive program to all residents.
In semester two the centre will also be offering units from Certificate IV in Disability.
“Our program is varied and flexible,” said Lyn.
“We are always interested in hearing suggestions for new classes from both participants and would-be tutors who are welcome to contact our program coordinator, Hilary, with any ideas.”
Belgrave South Community House is in Gilmore Court, Belgrave South.
For inquiries about classes and programs, phone the centre on 9754 2274 from 9am to 3pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 1pm on Friday.
