Move for exercise

KNOX seniors are being called to action for a world-first study investigating the impact of exercise on older people.
The Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) study will assess how exercise can maintain independence as people grow older.
MUARC is looking for people who are more than 70 years old who live in the Knox area and are willing to take part in exercise classes at the Knox Retirement Village on Burwood Highway.
Project leader Dr Lesley Day said the study will break new ground in studying the impact of any exercise program in maintaining independence and delaying the onset or progression of disability among older people.
Researchers will measure a range of health indicators and take the medical history of participants who then take part in either tai chi or a gentle stretching and flexibility exercise program at the subsidised cost of $3 per class.
Changes in participants’ physical health and wellbeing will be monitored throughout the program through a series of assessments.
Dr Day said increased independence among seniors would lower demand for support services and for places in supported accommodation.
“And, more importantly, older people will have improved quality of life,” she said.
Those interested in the program should contact Melinda Congiu on 9905 5089.
