Upwey celebrates two big wins

UPWEY bowls club sides one and two recorded big wins last Saturday against Ferntree Gully and Balwyn respectively. Because of overnight rain the Upwey grass green was running at 12 seconds, which resulted in the locals having a decided advantage over their Ferntree Gully opponents who would have come off a fast synthetic green.
As this win was the first for the season for the division three side members were understandably jubilant at the after match celebrations.
Former country Victoria representative Trevor Robertson, has improved with every game as a skip in this division so much so that his rink won with a massive 36 shots to 8 score line to win for them the Jim’s Antennas rink of the week award.
The highlight of this rink’s win was the form of Colin Benson. Promoted to this side after impressive performances in the division six side Benson playing as third was responsible for setting up the win with some accurate upshots into the head to give his skip an open run to the jack.
Another skip to show a big improvement is Andrew Walters, especially with his setting up of the head. This team who have had some disappointing losses this season, showed that persistence pays off by recording a seven shots win.
The division six side came home with a big win against Balwyn by a margin of 22 shots overall. Jim Miller, promoted to take the place of Colin Benson as skip, guided his team to a three shot win, while Geoff Collings’ team keeps on impressing the selectors with another good win.
The most pleasing aspect of this double win, is the improvement being shown by the 13 first year players stepping out onto the greens each week, which augurs well for the future of the club
