A healthier option

By Tania Martin
MACCLESFIELD children are ditching meat pies for carrot sticks and fruit.
Healthy food choices are now available at Macclesfield Primary School’s canteen with salads and fruit replacing fatty foods such as meat pies, and sausage rolls.
Since changing the menu to include healthy food the number of lunch orders placed by children has doubled.
The school used to have lunch order day once every fortnight, but now it is so popular that it is held every week.
Children have embraced the healthier lunches with gusto with some ordering everything on the menu from a munch n crunch box which is a salad with egg, cheese, lettuce, tomato, carrot and cucumber sticks to the fruit cups and bags of popcorn.
Teacher Dianne Ashcroft said the canteen is now buzzing with energy and the students are really excited about eating healthier.
She said the school spent $600 buying Tupperware for the lunches so that it could continue its rubbish free lunchtime policy.
Ms Ashcroft said the parents who volunteer in the canteen are also doing a fantastic job as it takes two days to prepare for the lunch day.
The parents collect the lunch orders the day before, count the money and then order local produce so that the food is all fresh for the kids on the day.
Ms Ashcroft said the staff are also jumping on board and ordering salads and fruit cups for lunch.
