PERFORMING arts will take centre stage in Emerald as the curtain is raised for the final act in the long-awaited Gemco theatre redevelopment.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood last week announced $440,000 towards the $900,000 redevelopment of the theatre in Kilvington Drive while the Labor Government has pledged $200,000 and the Shire of Cardinia $250,000.
The funding will help Gemco expand the existing facility in Kilvington Drive to include 150-seat auditorium with a large stage, dressing rooms, storage and work areas, a foyer, toilets and undercover disabled access.
Gemco president Kate McManus said it has been a long hard road to gain the funding and despite several setbacks the group kept pushing forward with the project.
“We had some bad potholes along the way but we managed to fill the holes in with a mountain of paperwork which led us to the funding for the centre,” she said.
David Greenaway of Gemco said the group has been looking to expand its performing arts space since 1999.
He said to finally get the funding was a huge relief but there is still a lot of work to be done.
“It’s (the funding) like when you are running a race and the bell rings for the final lap and now the hard bit is done, you feel worn out but you find the strength to make it to the finish line,” Mr Greenaway said.
Mr Wood said the community will benefit significantly from the arts complex project which will provide a focal point for entertainment in the Emerald township.
“The current centre has outgrown its use and this funding will allow for a state-of-the-art theatre which I am sure will provide many hours of entertainment,” he said.
Arts Minister Mary Delahunty has promised $200,000 towards the project if re-elected in November.
Ms Delahunty said the arts centre will provide a better venue for theatrical productions and concerts staged by the dynamic Gemco Players.
“This improved theatre will allow Gemco to build on its excellent reputation as a vibrant community cultural centre here in the heart of Emerald,” she said.
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said this new investment of funding will allow Gemco to increase its annual calendar of theatre, dance and music performances.
“Local schools, amateur theatre, concerts, markets, art displays and film presentation will now be staged locally,” she said.
“Everyone involved can look forward to an even more exciting future at Gemco.”
Ranges Ward councillor Ed Chatwin said the funding is a splendid result for both young and old.
Cr Chatwin said the council is committed to ensuring that it establishes and supports a first class operation.
“After years of disappointments the dream has now reached reality,” he said.
Oh what a show!
