KNOX students are uniting to form a new wave of water conservation.
The council recently launched its new School Water Challenge, which encourages primary and secondary students to conceive and develop original water saving ideas – with the winning schools receiving cash prizes to go towards their water conservation initiatives.
Knox mayor Jim Penna said the program was an opportunity to engage the generation that will ultimately benefit from current efforts to save water now.
“Using the water saving principles – rethink, reuse, recycle – students are asked to design a water-saving item or create a communication piece, for example a website of short film,” Cr Penna explained.
“The entries will then be judged on their uniqueness, effectiveness, creativity and relevance.”
Each school in Knox is invited to submit one entry, so students will need to brainstorm their ideas to decide on the best initiative.
After entries close on 21 September, the top 10 entries will be displayed in the foyer of Knox Civic Centre in the lead-up to the student-focused Sustainability Ambassadors’ Conference in October.
Winners in both the primary and secondary categories will be given $1000 to be used by the school.
The School Water Challenge is part of Knox City Council’s Schools for Sustainability Program that was established earlier this year.
