RESIDENTS of Selby and surrounds are being urged to respond to a community road safety survey with under three weeks to run before its closing date.
Selby Precinct Safety Group spokeswoman Julie Howard said approximately 140 out of 500 surveys had been received as at Wednesday, 5 April, but a much greater level of response is hoped for before the deadline on Sunday, 30 April.
“We want to try and get as many responses as we can. If people don’t support (the survey) and we don’t get any feedback, it means nothing will ever improve,” she said.
The purpose of the Safer Selby survey is to find out how the community views the extent of traffic and pedestrian danger in the precinct.
The precinct, identified as the shopping and trading centre on Belgrave-Gembrook road, is the source of safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians, including schoolchildren walking to and from the shops.
The survey also aims to discover what safety improvements the community believes are necessary.
“This has been an issue since the early 1970s, and back then we wouldn’t have had the same amount of traffic, kids crossing the road and the speed problems we have now.
“If they were having safety issues then, then we’re definitely in need of changes now,” Ms Howard said.
Once survey data have been assessed, the group aims to meet with Monbulk MP James Merlino and Shire of Yarra Ranges representatives in order to implement long-awaited changes.
“Just because an area has many problems and is constantly a challenge – and therefore ends up in the ‘too-hard basket’ – that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to pursue improvements that will increase the overall safety of traffic and pedestrians.
“If you’ve got a chance to have your say, say it,” she said.
Copies of the survey include a reply-paid envelope for the Selby Family Clinic.
Alternatively, surveys can be completed and dropped in at the Selby General Store or Selby Community House.
Copies can also be sent to residents by emailed request to community @dstream.aunz.com.
Queries can be directed to Ms Howard on 0425 776 115.
