MONBULK Rotary has urged residents to take advantage of its Bowelscan program.
Monbulk Pharmacy and Rotary have joined forces this year to introduce the Bowelscan program to the town.
For $6 residents can purchase an early detection kit which they can use at home, and during May the processing of the pathology is free.
People taking the test will receive a letter in the mail telling them if they need to make a follow-up appointment with their doctors.
Bowelscan is a Rotary program which was developed in New South Wales in 1982 and is now conducted by more than 250 clubs across Australia to increase community knowledge of bowel cancer and its symptoms.
Monbulk Rotary president Des Cox said that he was very excited about the introduction of the Bowelscan program to the town.
Mr Cox said bowel cancer was one of the most common forms of internal cancer for people in their 40s, and that it was important to promote early detection.
There are 12,000 new cases of bowel cancer and 5000 deaths every year but Mr Cox said early detection gives people a 90 per cent chance of being cured.
Those wanting to take the scan have until Wednesday, 31 May, and can get a kit at the Monbulk Pharmacy in Main Street.
