Martin gets on the board

By Dennis Fuller
GOLFERS at Emerald Golf Club, who like to share their time equally between hitting golf balls and drinking wine, were in for a treat last Saturday.
The Old Orchard Winery, from Boronia, sponsored the event and ensured that a goodly slurp on the product was tasted after play. It was unfortunate that the display was not set up before play, as I have no doubt, golf shots would have been much more creative. Martin Yeats, playing his first day of competition golf with the club after gaining his first handicap, proved the handicapper wrong.
It was obvious that the 15 strokes supplied him was much too generous as he came in with a nett 66. This gave him the overall and B grade prizes and a little of the sponsor’s product to boot. I have no doubt he will win many more unless the handicapper reins him in.
Kenneth Hill continued his golden vein of form to clean up the rest of A Grade with 70 points, playing off 12. Peter Jones, like Yeats, hit the winners’ podium for the first time by winning C Grade with a nett 68 off his 28 handicap.
Ben Balfour, fresh from a two-month layoff, played good golf for 68, Graeme White managed 69 while consistent Ross Martin scored 70.
Nearest the pins was won by Ian Scott on the second, Balfour the 12th, Greg Horrocks the 13th while Ron Wilson cleaned up the pro pin on the 18th.
Next week is a par event, which will see many pairs taking the chance to play the next round of the four ball best ball competition.
