ANGRY Monbulk residents are speaking out about the dire need for public toilets in the township.
The one toilet block, located at the back of the Safeway car park on Main Road, offers limited access, forcing disabled and elderly residents to resort to other means.
Elderly Monbulk resident Lillian Seamer is unable to navigate the stairs leading down to the toilets, forcing her to buy a coffee just to use the toilet at local cafes, or to leave town before her errands are run.
“We’ve all got walkers and the toilets seem dangerous down there.
“They are very isolated and dangerous for an old lady with a handbag,” she said.
Jenny Breukel, from Jenny’s Shoppe, says there are many cases like Lillian’s, and she is often asked if people can use the toilets in her business.
After years of complaints, Ms Breukel believes it is time to do something about it.
“I think we have been needing a toilet for 20 or even 30 years.
“It’s a really urgent issue for Monbulk. The toilet needs to be top priority for this town.”
President of the Monbulk and District Community Opportunity Working Group, Mark Seymour, is putting pressure on the local council to do something about it.
Mr Seymour says the council are putting toilets in other areas that will hardly be used while the toilet situation in Monbulk is affecting residents every day.
“Disabled and elderly people cannot get down the stairs.
“It’s not good enough really in a town of this size,” he said.
