Hawks fight Mt Evelyn for win

MT EVELYN might have been widely considered underdogs, but they showed no such belief as they took it up to the reigning Premiers last Saturday in the opening round of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League football.
Led by the mid-field dominance of Dalton and Tesseriero, the Mounters took a 25-point lead into half time.
Chris Hughson gathered his troops for the vital third quarter and the Hawks responded.
Youngsters Hicken, Devers and Farmer were giving yeoman service and suddenly it was Monbulk applying the pressure.
A flurry of goals finished the match with Monbulk emerging grateful winners and Mt Evelyn valiant in defeat.
Monbulk 17.15.117 d Mt Evelyn 16.9.105.
Best: M. Hughson, J. Koole, T. Wragg, C. Mitchell, M. Mullinder.
Goals: Wragg 5, Koole 4, Farmer 2, Matt Mullinder 2.
Reserves
The paucity of umpires saw a new innovation in the league with Club Umpires appointed to control games. Nick Broekhof took charge of the Reserves game and gave a good account of himself as the Hawks overpowered the Mounters to register a great win.

Under 18s
A good start to the season although Monbulk played a side that is still team-building. Mt Evelyn applied pressure early, but were unable to penetrate the Hawk defence.
Monbulk was able to run away with the game in the second half with the side knitting together to follow team discipline and rules.
