Wildcats win Great Southern Classic

THE Eltham Wildcats have been named the 2008 Domestic Club of the Year by the Southern Classic committee.
Eltham was awarded this recognition in a close contest ahead of SEBC Saints (Kilsyth Association), Merinda Park (Cranbourne), Fosters Phantoms (Kilsyth) and Wasps (Knox).
This comes as the final results of the classic, which was held from 8 to 10 March, were tallied.
The Wildcats entered 10 teams into the tournament and recorded five Grand Final victories and one runners up to be the premier domestic club of the 2008 Classic.
“Eltham is delighted to accept this award, all coaches and parents thought this was a well run tournament and enjoyed the competition,” said club representative David Hickman.
“We will be back next year to defend the award and to continue the cooperation and support with two great associations in Kilsyth and Knox.”
Eltham was awarded a Spalding prize pack consisting of basketballs, coaching folders and a ball bag.
Tournament director Andy Trott congratulated the Eltham Basketball Club whose combined points from their 10 participating teams made them the inaugural winner of the Australian Domestic Club of the year award.
“The win was not easily achieved as there was spirited competition from the SEBC Saints, Fosters, Merinda Park and Wasps clubs,” he said.
“We look forward to the Great Southern Classic growing over the coming years and being recognised as an Australia’s domestic club championship.”
Entries for the 2009 Great Southern Classic will be available in late October.
