JUST days after officially launching the new Belgrave Park, the Shire of Yarra Ranges has released plans for further streetscape works to improve access and safety for the facility.
But the new park is not without its critics.
In a letter sent to the Mail, Selby resident Samantha Dunn said the park, opened on Saturday, 30 July and situated in Belgrave’s main street, next to the police station, did not adequately cater for families and elderly people.
“It is obvious that the Shire of Yarra Ranges intends no families to use the park as there is no play equipment,” she said.
Ms Dunn said elderly people would struggle to “make it across the road and up the ramps.”
“And if they do make it, there won’t be any seats with backs on them so they can sit comfortably.”
But last week Cr Robyn Hale announced that plans to improve access to the park were on display for public consideration.
“The works focus on improving safety at key crossing points,” Cr Hale said.
“Space permitting, the shire will endeavour to improve wheelchair access, use contrasting and tactile materials, and provide better site lines for both pedestrians and motorists.”
Cr Hale said the works would offer aesthetic benefits.
“Feature lighting will give Belgrave a whole new feel at night and link the main street with the Alexander car park.”
The plans are available for viewing at the Queen of Tarts Café in Belgrave’s main street.
Cr Hale said the streetscape works would add to the “sense of revitalisation already being experienced” in Belgrave.
“I’m sure residents and visitors to the local area will find it an even more popular township and tourist destination,” she said.
Public consideration will close on Saturday, 13 August, two weeks following the park’s opening.
