Vet clinic is cool for a change

BELGRAVE South Veterinary Clinic has some sound advice for all pet owners.
“As we are experiencing the sudden rush of summer heat, let’s not forget our pets’ comfort on these hot days as we are taking refuge in the cool house, or the pool or down at the beach,” said staff at the clinic.
“There are plenty of things that we can provide to ease the heat stress for our pet.
“For some dogs and cats it is important to strip the winter coat out to get rid of all of the dead hair and even a clip is necessary.
“A cool shady refuge is a must for outdoors and plenty of fresh water should be available at all times. (A bowl full of ice cubes is fun to play with).
“Plastic clam shells make a great pool for dogs to splash and play in while frozen raw meaty bones are an icy pole treat.
“Walking should be done in the cool of early morning or evening and two short walks are better than one long hot one.
“Let’s not forget the birds as they need a bath too to cool down and drink.
“This goes for the wild birds as well as our own. A soft spray from a hose is good too.
“Guinea pigs and rabbits suffer terribly from heat stress so move them out of the sun or provide shade cloth and plenty of ventilation.
“Last but not least, do not leave your dog in the car, even with the windows down an inch – it is still too hot! A car can get up to 50 degrees inside within minutes.”
