Big finish not enough for Upwey

PLAYING in the grand final of the Eastern Metropolitan Roamers Competition held on the excellent Boronia grass greens in perfect weather conditions, the Upwey-Tecoma side got off to a nervous start allowing their Bayswater opponents to take a commanding lead in the first nine ends.
Going into the halfway break Upwey-Tecoma were 17 shots down overall and looked to be in real trouble. Following a team discussion prior to the re-start a rejuvenated side took to the greens in a more meaningful way.
Dieter Eick and his team of Don Andrews, Paul Huthinson and Elaine Shepherd showed class as they outbowled their opponents over the final six ends to finish with a five shots win.
Not to be outdone, the rink skipped by George Simons, with Ron Meers, Leigh Robinson and Gretel Kornow, after being down by 17 shots with six ends to play, eventually got enough bowls into the head to put some serious pressure onto their opposition.
Winning 10 shots to nil from the final five ends this team finished the day seven shots down to give Bayswater an overall win by just two shots.
The final score being; Bayswater d Upwey-Tecoma 42-40.
With the club’s open tournament of two bowls triples coming up on Sunday 16 March, which has attracted entries from other clubs in the area, the 2007-08 season is primed to finish on a good note.
Players can now look forward to Wednesday afternoon competition taking over from Saturday Pennant.
