OLINDA Primary School is digging deep to help give firefighters fresh drinking water.
The school is calling for donations from local businesses so it can send bottled water to the firefighters who have been working to contain bushfires in north eastern Victoria for several weeks.
School council president Heather Herbertt came up with the idea last week.
Ms Herbert said if the fires where in the hills the school community would be making sandwiches or helping in some way.
So the school is doing what it can by raising money for bottled water.
One of the parents at the school who drives a truck is arranging for the water to be transported to north eastern Victoria.
Firefighters from across the hills are in north eastern Victoria fighting the bushfires and fire trucks from Sassafras, Olinda, Clematis, and Selby are being used to battle the blazes.
CFA Region 13 spokesman John Schauble said 26 fire crews from across the state are fighting the fires.
Mr Schauble said the CFA is now urging people to rethink their holiday plans because of the bushfires which are burning across Gippsland and north eastern Victoria.
He said over the next few weeks there will be some areas where it is simply not safe for people to travel because of current bushfires.
People wanting to make a donation to Olinda Primary School can call 9751 1181.
