Night market takes off

THE Yarra Valley experienced its first regular night time arts and craft market on Friday, 8 September.
Held at The Chapel Restaurant on Castella Street in Lilydale, the Chapel Night Market was a great success delivering a whole new market experience to the region.
Further markets will be held on the second Friday of each month from 5pm to 9pm.
Market coordinator Rebecca Ross said the market features a wide range of quality arts and crafts made by local and interstate artists.
She said wares on offer at the market include photography, paintings, lead lighting, silk garments and furnishings, ceramics, folk art, quilting and jewellery.
The market also features a range of hot food stalls. Patrons are able to enjoy a meal at the venue as well as purchase take home meals, Ms Ross said.
“The venue has a wonderful large open fire place for cold winter evenings and there is live entertainment as well,” she said.
Ms Ross said starting up the market made good sense on a number of levels.
“There is no other regular night market in the area and we believe the combination of arts, craft, entertainment and food will bring people together,” she said.
“Part of the idea is to get people out of their homes and socialising and to help build a stronger sense of community.
“It will also be a place where people can drop in for dinner, pick up first rate arts and craft, listen to live music and maybe even catch some street theatre,” she said.
Ms Ross, who also coordinates the Kallista Market on the first Saturday of each month, said the first Chapel Night Market was very popular.
“There is a lot of interest and people are very excited about this new concept,” she said.
Ms Ross said profits from the market would go to Careworks in Lilydale to help fund a range of welfare programs.
