Tigers roar after win

SHERBROOKE Rangers Under 13 Boys Tigers started their season with a gritty 1-0 away win over Nunawading.
A goal in the first half to forward Tom Leenheers set up the victory. Leenheers seized the ball from a congested scramble making brilliant 10-yard strike to the top left corner of the net.
It was a tense game where Sherbrooke held the upper hand across every line. Gutsy play by Zac Saber, Trent Rolfs, Zac Tomsic and Patrick O’Lachlan in midfield kept the Sherbrooke in their attacking half for most of the game.
In defence, Stephen Torsello made some telling saves and was ably supported by Charlie Tibb in the sweeper role. Aaron Thomson won the coach’s award for his continual running and clearing in defence.
After the game ecstatic coach Shaun Bayly said, “The team played like champions… it was a cracking start to the season.”
It was a similar opening for Under 12 Girls Lasers with a bright 3-1 win over Boronia at Baynes Park Reserve. The Lasers first goal came started from a Cordelia Crosbie pass to Elissa Doonan whose deft touch set up impressive forward Stephanie Ashmore for a left foot strike.
This was followed by a spectacular Cordelia Crosbie goal, a 30-metre volley from a kick-in. Boronia answered with a goal but the match was sealed when Stephanie Ashmore scored a second goal, this time a right-foot strike from the edge of the box.
Elsewhere two late goals gave the Under 18 girls a convincing 3-0 win against Glen Eira. The game featured some wonderful displays of heading from Nikki Ceeney, Tanya Newman and Perri Gardiner. The Under 13 girls were beaten by Knox City 5-1, while debut side, the Under 11 Girls Gypsyz defeated Carrum Utd 2-1.
