PATRONS at Monbulk Aquatic Centre will have more room to move with a $1.07 million upgrade announced in the shire’s 2008-09 draft budget.
The refurbishment includes a new heated indoor swimming pool, a toddler’s play area and gym renovations which will help to take the pressure off the overrun centre.
“The facility is tired and incredibly well used,” Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn said.
“It’s almost bursting at the seams.”
Cr Dunn said major work was needed to cope with demand.
Patrons and staff welcomed the redevelopment.
“It’s our dream to expand training programs and the council’s investment is definitely a start,” centre manager Helen Hostettler said.
“We get 120,000 people through a year. We need more space and facilities to accommodate such high usage.”
One regular member, Margaret, said she only visited during off-peak times to avoid the crowds.
“I try to swim when it’s quiet because when it’s packed the ripples in the water affect my arthritis,” she said.
The centre is used by people of all ages and offers a range of services.
“The redevelopment is probably long overdue,” Cr Dunn said.
