TWO hills fire safety programs have been recognised in this year’s Fire Awareness Awards.
Ferntree Gully’s Knoxbrooke received the Community Award for its fire safety course for adults with disabilities, while the Yarra Region received funding for a children’s education program.
The awards were presented at the RACV Club on Wednesday 8 October.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Country Fire Authority and Department of Sustainability and Environment initiative was developed to recognise successful fire safety initiatives.
Knoxbrooke assistant manager Jodie Colclough said their safety skills awareness program, run with Orana Neighbourhood House and Yarra Area CFA, covered fire safety in the home and the bush.
Six people took part in the five-week program late last year.
Organisers created a video of the class. It can be viewed on YouTube.
Ms Colclough said the film might be used to teach other disability groups and children.
The Yarra Area CFA received the $10,000 Fire Safety Grant to make the Yarra Area Hazard House a reality.
The house is an interactive way for kids to learn about home fire hazards through practical and written exercises.
The program will benefit students from the 150 schools within the CFA Yarra Area.
The Yarra Area includes Belgrave, Ferntree Gully, Olinda, Mt Dandenong, Emerald and Mt Evelyn.
