HILLS environmentalists met last week with the Shadow Environment Minister David Davis to press the State Government on weed invasion.
Representatives from the shires of Cardinia and Yarra Ranges also took part in the meeting.
Upper Yarra and Dandenongs Environment Council member Darcy Duggan said the issue was becoming a “black hole” for the hills.
If something were not done soon, the problem would be irreversible, Mr Duggan said.
Mr Davis said the meeting had been an important step for the Opposition in developing policies for the 2010 state elections and had suggested a number of short-term issues he could lobby the Government on.
It had given him a clear understanding of the issue facing the hills region, he said.
Weeds were a complex issue which needed State Government attention now, Mr Duggan said.
“It’s good they (the Opposition) took the time to listen but I hope it doesn’t get buried under yet another policy process,” he said.
