Hills pair write in the music mix

By Tania Martin
RUBBING shoulders with the cream of the music industry was a dream come true for budding composers Jordan Scotney and Hayden Schueler.
The Hills duo recently joined renowned composer John Foreman and Australia’s sweetheart, Kate Ceberano to write a song.
Kallista’s Jordan Scotney and Hayden Schueler of Ferny Creek were chosen from hundreds of students to help compose a song for the Music: Count Us In project.
The song was sung by more than 350,000 primary school students across the country.
The project aims to encourage schools and parents to highlight the importance of music education.
Jordan said the song took just a day to compose.
But Hayden said it wasn’t as easy as it sounded.
He said the song had to have a specific meaning centred on the theme of the project, which was music education.
But despite the challenges, the group of four was able to arrange the musical score in just an hour.
“It was the lyrics that were the hardest,” Hayden said.
“It was amazing to see how quickly John Foreman took our ideas and put it into a song.”
The pair still can’t quite believe it all happened.
“It’s just so amazing to be chosen out of so many kids … it’s like winning Tattslotto,” Jordan said.
The team presented the song in Canberra on Thursday 23 October as students sang it in a nation-wide sing-off.
Despite living just a town apart, Jordan and Hayden met only two years ago.
The pair started school in 2006 at Blackburn High and soon became close friends.
They moved to Blackburn High because of its music program which is considered one of the best in the state.
Music has always been a big part of their lives and their stories are strangely similar.
Both started playing piano at the age of six, but then moved on to other musical interests.
Jordan’s passion turned to the drums at 12 while Hayden started playing the saxophone at the same age.
Despite a shared passion, the pair has two distinctly different career paths mapped out.
Jordan wants to peruse a life as a drummer and one day wants to share his passion as a music teacher and Hayden hopes to become a songwriter.
The pair also plays in their own band, Through the Window, which they hope will continue to grow.
