Beware of water scams

By Tania Martin
CLAIMS of reduced quality drinking water have led to calls for people to be wary of salesmen.
Yarra Valley Water (YVW) has warned residents to watch out for a water filter scam running throughout Melbourne. The warning follows several reports of salespeople misrepresenting the water utility and providing misleading information.
Salesmen claiming to be from YVW have been calling residents and telling them they have won a water filtration unit but the customer needs to pay for the attachments.
YVW managing director Tony Kelly said the scammers have been luring people with the line that water filters remove potentially harmful substances from drinking water.
Mr Kelly said the substances mentioned by the salesmen were not found in Melbourne’s catchments.
Water quality results are regularly available on the water utility’s website at www.yvw.com.au.
Anyone unsure of a salesman or concerned about water quality can call YVW on 131 721.
