HILLS pedestrians can feel safer following the launch of two footpath improvement plans.
In Mt Evelyn, improved footpaths and a new bus stop will make using York and Hereford roads safer.
The $27,580 project will include the widening of Bailey Road and the creation of turning lanes from Bailey Road into Hereford Road.
While in Montrose a new footpath along Mt Dandenong Road will provide a complete pathway to link the town to residential areas.
The $57,088 project will connect the existing footpath in Claire Court to the bus stop in Bretby Way.
Work on both projects will start in January.
Friends get grant
VOLUNTEER groups will have a share of a $120,000 cash boost.
The funds were announced last week as part of the latest round of the Volunteer Small Grants program.
Friends of Sassafras Creek was one of 23 groups to receive a grant.
The $1270 boost will be used to continue their work preserving the local environment surrounding the creek.
Applications are now open for the next round of funding and can be made by calling 1300 366 356.
Fireworks warning
PET owners should be wary of fireworks this festive season.
Knox Council’s local laws coordinator Elke Tapley said fireworks can distress pets, especially dogs.
“Dogs have an acute sense of hearing and street fireworks can make them panic,” she said.
“It can result in abnormal behaviour like jumping over fences, or chewing through or even digging under them to get free.”
Concerned owners should keep their pets indoors or seek advice on anti-anxiety medications from their vet.
Microchipping pets and updating their details will ensure a speedy reunion.
Residents can report illegal fireworks to WorkCover Authority on 1800 136 089.
