Green effort

Students and teachers will make their small screen debuts as the school features in a number of segments on Channel 10’s morning show ‘9am with David and Kim’.
A television crew spent last Friday filming the two segments.
Presenter and 2007 Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year, Arron Wood took the chance to check out the school’s vegie garden, wetlands and eco-centre.
Teacher Michelle Rayner said it was important to promote the message that anyone could get involved in helping the environment.
But this is not the first time the school has been singled out for its dedication to the environment. In December, it was named as a finalist in the 2008 Origin Switch Awards.
Students created a film mapping out the development of the school’s garden and environmental centre.
It also outlined how locals could get involved in saving energy and reducing their economic footprint.
Principal Debra Herrman said it was more than just providing a sustainable education for students with hands-on knowledge of recycling and re-use systems.
She said it was about educating the wider community.
Ms Herrman said the curriculum had been structured around the environment.
“We are providing practical links between the classroom and real life,” she said.
“It’s not just about science and the environment but incorporating literacy and numeracy as well.” Ms Herrman said the eco-centre was not just another project for students and teachers, it was a way of life.
She said it is about more than a curriculum but about teaching the whole community how to improve and care for the environment.
Ms Herrman said the school was also being recognised for its humanitarian efforts.
It last year raised cash, and medical supplies to send a family to Cambodia for relief efforts.
Ms Herrman said the medical supplies included band aides as well as food and clothes.
“It’s about caring about what you do and making a difference,” she said.
The school’s two segments will be aired on the morning show in the next four to six weeks.
