WATCH out Hollywood – Victoria’s budding film makers are set to shine in the fourth annual Blue Dandenongs Young Filmmakers Festival this Saturday.
Mater Christi student Eden Carrel, with her short film Should Time Really Matter, is one of 11 finalists.
The 17-year-old produced the flick for a school assignment in just one week, including composing and performing the music.
“I wrote the music first and then I had the idea in my head,” she said.
“It took a couple of days to shoot and then a couple of days to put together.”
Students worked from the theme: place, space, time.
“You could branch off, so I went with the importance of time to different people,” Eden said.
The main character, played by her brother, is running after time, trying to catch up with it.
Eden is nervous about putting her work before an audience.
“But it’s really exciting,” she said.
The competition was open to film makers aged up to 30. Eden was one of the youngest finalists.
Festival director Tilla Buden said audiences could sneak a peek at Australian film’s future.
“And it’s a crazy, beautiful, cheeky and inspiring future we’re looking at,” she said.
“We’ve unearthed some unique stories, a ridiculously talented young comedic actor-producer, and, of course, a plunder of brilliant young filmmakers.”
The judging panel included Clayton Jacobson, who directed the award winning Australian film Kenny.
Awards include a $500 prize for the best film from a Shire of Yarra Ranges resident, $1000 for the best film and a Best Under-18 Filmmaker award.
The event will include a twilight market, roaming performers, a garden party and a screening of the Little Big Shots kids’ film festival at Burrinja Theatre.
The films will screen at Cameo Outdoor Cinema, 1628 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, on Saturday 21 February, from 1pm til late.
Ticket prices range from $13 to $17.30.
Other events and entertainment will take place throughout Belgrave and Upwey.
