Art sculpture set to leap from canvas

By Casey Neill
IVAN Milano’s vibrant paintings leap from the canvas.
The Croatian-born artist has layered thick, brightly coloured paint to create a sculpture-like effect.
He opened his first solo exhibition, Something for Everyone, at Burrinja last Sunday (22 February).
Milano has been painting for more than 40 years and was thrilled to share his unique creations with others.
“I love it,” he said.
The self-taught artist struggled to pursue his passion in the communist former Yugoslavia.
He was forced to work as a barber, despite his obvious talent.
“You can’t be an artist in a communist country. It’s very hard,” he said.
“Over there, people are jealous, and jealousy breaks you down and doesn’t give you what you deserve,” he said.
A move to Australia 29 years ago gave Milano the encouragement he needed to succeed.
“It’s a different kind of mentality,” he said. “England, Australia and America are three countries where they are looking for good things.”
Milano takes inspiration from nature and colour. Insects, flowers and animals feature heavily in the collection.
“When I walk on the street, I’m not looking for fashion or something, I’m looking for colours,” he said.
“I’m always looking, and that gives me something you couldn’t believe. That’s filled my heart and my soul.”
Something for Everyone will be on display at Burrinja, 351 Glenfern Road, Upwey, until 9 March.
