IT’S time for runners to take up the ultimate fun run challenge – the Puffing Billy Great Train Race.
Thousands of visitors will converge on the Dandenongs 9.30am on Sunday 3 May for the event that has long been considered the most popular on the marathon calendar.
Tourism Minister Tim Holding will again take up the challenge to race the iconic train 13.2 kilometres from Belgrave to Emerald.
Two-time winner, Craig Semple and last year’s female title holder, Prue Davison will also put themselves to the test.
Lloyd Morgan, 82, the oldest competitor this year hopes to beat his previous time of 78 minutes.
Puffing Billy spokeswoman Nadine Hutchins said Mr Morgan proved every year that anyone could do it.
“He is truly inspirational and a great example to others,” she said.
The race has been capped at 3000 participants this year for the safety of everyone involved.
The winner of both the male and female section will take home a trip to Antarctica.
There will also be numerous random prizes awarded on the day.
All funds raised from the race will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the tourist railway.
